Moving is a difficult transition no matter how good of a move it may be. There is always going to be some occurrence that leaves you wondering if life would have been simpler if you had stayed put. But, rest assured, there is hope. All you need is a little forethought and a sturdy notebook and pen.
The first consideration is the most important: if you are renting a moving truck, what size will be needed? Representatives with the various rental truck agencies always ask what size household you are moving in their attempt to determine the size truck you will need. But you have a better handle on your material possessions, so regardless of whether they say your 2-bedroom home will fit in a certain size truck, look to the next largest size if you have outdoor items to move as well. And be sure to look at the trucks yourself as dimensions can be deceiving.
Once you have picked out your truck size, finalize the reservations and make clear the time and date you will need the truck and what their policy is regarding late equipment arrivals. One snafu in your moving plans will dampen the whole adventure with missed dates and trampled goals.
Now you will need to start collecting boxes to pack your items if you are not going to purchase them from a rental truck company. The best way to start this is well in advance of your moving date. Call around each day to several stores, including grocery stores and discount outlets, and find out if they keep boxes or flatten them immediately. Try to find out the name of a person specifically in charge of such a task so you can keep the lines of communication open and get your boxes. Different types of stores have different size boxes so be sure to consider what it is you are packing and how sturdy the box needs to be.
If you haven't started writing down your plans yet, now is the time. A nice spiral-bound notebook works well for organizing your moving effort and being sure nothing is forgotten. Your itinerary, phone calls to make, services to connect and disconnect are a few of the important tasks that lie ahead of you. Write down any and all mental notes you may take and follow up on your remaining questions.
Once you do start physically moving, consider how many days you will have the truck and how much help you will need from other people on both ends of the move. Enough arms and legs will make loading and unloading that much easier and you will settle into your new life with a little less stress.
