1. Always periodically check your pet's collar to see that it has not become too tight during the growing process. You should be able to at least move one finger between the collar and his neck. Collars are not meant to be "chokers".
2. Never leave a pet in a car/truck in the summertime, even if you have the windows slightly open. An animal can "roast" within MINUTES in a hot area, and cars heat up quickly in the hot summer months. Dehydration sets in, and shock and even death can occur.
3. See that your pet has special treats and toys of his own. A basket in the corner for his own toys can be quite handy, and some pets will go to their basket and "shop" around until they find that specific plaything.
4. Don't allow small children to be alone with your pets. Although most children do not want to intentionally hurt an animal, it is easy to mishandle a trusting pet by pulling, poking, or choking. Some unfortunate animals have been mistakenly abused by being dropped or being caught in a slamming door by young children.
5. Have a special time for walks with your dog, even if he has a fenced yard, and playtimes with your cat.
6. Leave the radio or tv on when you must leave him alone, and leave a gnawbone for entertainment for a dog, or a catnip toy for a cat.
7. Talk to him. Tell him you love him. Give him special pettings. Dogs and cats both seem to like ear and head massages (not too rough!) Dogs love tummy rubs, but most cats are too sensitive for that. For cats, try, gentle nose rubs.
Although this is not a part of the list, it is a very important for your pet's well-being. See that he is protected from fleas (collars are not very effective), and be sure he is checked at least once a year for wormings, and necessary vaccinations.
Follow these simple caring rules, and it is guaranteed your pet will reward you with appreciation and affection!
